Newsletter #4 - Middlesex

What a great day!! Medals all round

Firstly I like to say how proud I am of you all. We gave our best showing at a tournament ever. The Pumas won the Team development shield and the Panthers came runners up in the bowl final.

New players George, Jake and Dean played superbly fitting into the team brilliantly. Duggie had a storming game tackling everything that moved. The whole team played for each other and as one of the Puma's coaches I was incredibly happy. We have had some difficult times at festivals, but with draws against Roslyn Park B's and Hackney Bulls, the only loss of the day was to Teddington. Sunday showed how much you guys have improved and you should all feel very proud.

The Panthers were unlucky to be beaten in the second pool game against Ruislip with them scoring during the last play of the game. The Ref commented on what a great game both teams had played. In the Quarter final we beat Saracens 28-0 which was a fantastic result. After going behind by a try in the semi final against Teddington the boys battled away. Smellis, oops sorry, Ellis held his nerve to convert the try making us 7-5 winners. In the final against London Welsh we held out well. Welsh were a great team and played good rugby beating us and winning the bowl.

Once again we are extremely proud of you all.

Tour

On Friday the 28th March the minis are going on tour, for the guys that are not touring there probably won't be any rugby that weekend. Margaret and Sam have ordered the boys that are going on tour hoodies and bags. If you are not coming on tour and wish to purchase any of these items please speak to either of them this weekend.

See you all on Sunday.

A Plate for the Pumas!

Well done to the Pumas who won the Plate in the C Tournament at Imber Court today

In a closely contested final they beat Rosslyn Park by 1 try to 0, the try scored by Alex. Congratulations to the whole team who played with massive commitment in every game.

In the A tournament the Panthers fought valiantly through a tough draw to make the final of the Bowl, where they went down to London Welsh.

Well do to both teams, for an excellent tournament.

Pumas Grasshopper B Festival

The Pumas played in their first festival of 2007/8 this weekend, when they travelled to nearby Grasshoppers for their B Festival. In glorious, warm sunshine they played in high spirits and were unlucky to be drawn in a strong group with Teddington and Farnham.

Losing the first two games the Pumas faced Ealing for the 3rd/4th place playoff and came alive, scoring two excellent forwards' tries, with first Callum and then Ollie&Kieran being forced across the line

Ealing fought back gallantly and scored two tries of their own to make the final score 2-2

Congratulations to Alfie and Abu in theit first festival, and to Caio who was awarded Greg's player of the day:

Good Results at London Welsh

After a disappointment at Farnham last week, the Panthers and Pumas turned in excellent performances at London Welsh. With both teams turning in the best performances of the season, spectators enjoyed two great games of rugby.

The Panthers took an early lead through Callum, and held on to it almost to the end when a breakaway try from Welsh equalled the score.

The Pumas ran in handy winners, 2 tries to nil with Ellis and Luke scoring. Our latest new joiner Abu playing a fine game on the wing.

Tour - Bournemouth Mini Rugby Festival, Sunday 15th April 2007

The U10’s tour programme appoints me as ‘gutter press’ for the day – gutted to be pressed into such a role, yes, but it involves drinking and it’s in print, so it must be true – here we go…

Big festival, four pools of five teams per age group. Big site, sunny day, single portaloos (not big) - avoid if at all possible. Big parrot amongst the piratical parents turns out to be Reg, Reece’s granddad.

Arrived 9am, our first game scheduled for 10am. By 10.02 Greg is somewhat frustrated – and the boys aren’t even playing yet. Someone’s switched the order of play, so the boys warm down and then up again. Actually it’s so warm that the whole U10’s Twickenham entourage soon move base into the shade, so that players, supporters and beers can all be kept as cool as possible. Soon we’re playing the home team, getting off to a slow start until Andy livens up the pace. It’s a tough, physical game and the team works well together, determined not to let Bournemouth ‘try’ anything. Jack R. scores our first try, followed by another sprint over the line by Callum. At 0-2 and the last play of the game, the pirates (and parrot) are already smiling when Ellis made it 0-3. A great first match of the day.

Rest awhile, then playing Hemel Hempstead. Two minutes into the first half it’s Ellis again, running straight through the opposition to score – at last he’s been listening to his coach, or at least his mum! Soon after, Sam G. gets the ball and isn’t going to let anyone take it from him, not until he’s over that try line. Alex must have been listening to Greg too recently – he runs wide and fast and succeeds in making the score 3-0 at half-time. Hemel play a much more aggressive second half. There seems to be a lot of mauling going on and the ball going nowhere fast, until a Hemel throw-in near the centre-line where Twickenham gets possession and Thomas B. puts the ball over the line, scoring his first match try. Final score 4-0, well done!

Third game – Ellingham and Ringwood. (Hmmm, two teams at once, no matter, we’re Twickenham, the name of rugby. Where’s the bottle opener? In baby Ellie’s bag, naturally. Love her mini-supporter’s kit, by the way. Now, remember it’s left-handed drinking or a snitch finds you and fines you). In truth, I can’t recall any of this game – but only because I was watching the U7’s several pitches away, honest, Cap’n. I am almost reliably informed that the boys again won 4-0, with Callum scoring a cracker of a try, then ‘Coca-Cola’ Sam G., with the Coke repeating on him because he then scored a second time, and Ellis managing to fit in a try just before the final whistle.

Fourth match – Aberdare (it’s near Cardiff). Our toughest match in the pool but we still dominate the game. Alex makes a fantastic run, with three guys failing to stop him – this turns out to be the only try of the match, but there was a lot of good defensive teamwork, and a mention must go to Sam G. for treating his opposition like skittles, to be bowled down and sent flying. 1-0 at the whistle, that’ll do – the team have won all of their four matches and not conceded a single try! Top of the pool – let’s drink to that.

So, to the cup semi-final against Upminster. What can I write? Tensions are high, the ground is hard and unfortunately Upminster have two up on us by half-time. We have good defensive teamwork from Callum, Andy and Sam G., but Upminster are a strong team with excellent passing skills and they hold the 2-0 lead until the end. I hear whispers of ‘We was robbed’ and ‘How much did they bribe the ref?’ but – we lost this one. Time to adjourn to watch the U7’s play the tag final of the shield (they lost 4-3) and then some very well-earned refreshment (watching is so exhausting!). Roasted parrot, anyone?

I’ve only really mentioned the try-scorers above, due to my limited rugby vocabulary (drink, ball, try, score, line, scrum and now ruck and maul) but I was very impressed by every single player doing their best as part of the team, for however long they were on the pitch. Kieran played while in agony with raw blisters – and cannily used an opponent to lean on as he stood back up after a ruck. Others were also brave, taking injuries without complaint. The boys were well behaved off the pitch too, though I can’t say the same for all the parents! We can be proud of all of all the squad –

VERY WELL DONE TWICKENHAM U10’s TOURISTS, FOR A BRILLIANT TEAM EFFORT.

Animals at Middlesex Festival

Ealing 5 v Twickenham 5

On a bright sunny Sunday morning all the guys finally made it to Ealing after traffic jams, left at home boots and going to the wrong location.

Looking around the other teams it appeared that they had all decided to pick the biggest guys they could find for their teams. Twickenham lined up against Ealing in their first match. Ealing’s game plan as with all the other teams we seem to play recently is give it to the biggest boy on the pitch the ball and let him run. With precise passing from the back of the scrum by Ali L Twickenham attempted to play attractive passing rugby however the final pass just could not reach its destination. After Ealing scored with a (yes you’ve guessed) it a big boy crashing through try the guys woke up. A superb dummy by Sam then a break through the gap to score was the highlight of the game. Great defensive play stopped the Ealing boys in their tracks however we just couldn’t make the last pass count.

Finchley 10 V Twickenham 5

Again we lined up against another massive team with the same game plan. Both of their trys came from the big runner crashing over. Great line out work by Jamie the salmon helped Twickenham to have a much better game. Callum was involved in almost every maul and a massive try saving tackle by Thomas stopped Finchley going over for a third try. After a storming run by Ellis, Reece gathered the ball from the back of the ruck and slipped down the blindside into the corner for a try. After the break we suffered an injury, Jack carried the ball into contact taking 3 players to tackle him he received a dead leg ruling him out of the rest of the tournament. All we needed was one more try to top the group but it would just not come. With the coach (me) still suffering from my own disappointment at losing in the semi-final of the Middlesex bowl the previous day I think I was too harsh on the boys and for that I’m sorry. You are a great team if we carry on training and trying to play a passing game I think in the long run we will become the better team. If you watch the All Blacks they can all pass and run with the ball. It doesn’t just involve the biggest players hitting up and not passing and becoming a one trip pony team. I know I get emotional (the Staines coach words) at times but it’s because I care about the boys and the team so sorry.

Twickenham O V Harrow 0

The last game summed up the day. We played some great rugby but with the last pass not reaching its destination and a couple of wrong decisions (please stop running back into the pack) meant we just couldn’t near the Harrow line. Great scrummaging by Ali S, Reece, Jamie and Kieran gave us great platform ball against a massive pack. Our defence held strong with both Andy and Alex making a number of one on one tackles against their opposite number. With Ali S captaining the team for the first time he really stepped up to the plate with a massive game.

Twickenham Beasts v Harrow

What a day for the mighty Beasts!!!!

All the hard work throughout the season finally paid off.

Harrow lined up against our team with a number of players twice the size of our guys; however the Beasts refused to be intimidated.

Twickenham 15 Harrow 15

In a close game that demanded the Beasts put their bodies on the line all players came out with flying colours. From the start Harrow passed the ball to their prop who after a charging run met with the waiting bodies of Caio, Gareth and Thomas B as the guys wrapped the ball up and pushed the Harrow pack back the whole team realized that they could tackle Harrow’s big guys.

After Harrow scored first the Beasts heads did not go down, from the restart we took the ball into contact, after a short maul Luke spotted a gap, breaking from the back of the maul and with Harrow giving chase he ran half the length of the pitch to score in the corner.

At the start of the second half a searing run by Armand drew the Harrow defence; after a sweet off load, Ashley ran down the line sliding over the whitewash on his knees to score his first ever try. With the watching Animals shouting his name Ashley's huge smile said it all.

Again Harrow scored with a driving maul and one of their big guys breaking from the back to go over the line.

On the day the Beasts all-round play was out standing, this was evident in the last try with precision pass and great running and a final solo effort Toby crossed the line. Harrow scored with the last play of the game from another maul. However the Beasts knew what they had to do in the next game.

Twickenham 15 v Harrow 10

The second game started very much like the fist game ended with Harrow scoring from; yes you’ve guessed it a driving maul. From the restart William skinned the Harrow winger on the outside running half the length of the pitch he crossed the line with an impressive swan dive.

As Harrow came back twice as hard great tackling by Paul, Armand and Jack MCQ kept them out. After winning 2 scrums against the head the Beasts front row that consisted of Gareth, Thomas and new Sam, making his rugby debut, pushed Harrow off the ball with superb acceleration. Toby picked the ball up from the back of the scrum he crossed the line for his second try of the day. As Harrow once again came back Paul performed an outstanding try saving tackle. After a Harrow try Ollie was on the end of a well constructed team effort with still a bit to do he broke a number of tackles and powered over the line. From the restart The Harrow team once again mauled to our line this time the Beasts were wise leaving a number of players out of the maul as the Harrow player broke from the back. He ran into our defence as he trundled over the line the guys put their body under the ball (I can’t tell you who as the all dived in) with the ball held up the referee blew the final whistle. Unaware they had won Gareth enquired have we won showing that the boys had just concentrated on the game and nothing else. Unfortunately Steve could not make it today but I know he would be proud of you all.

A special well done to Newcomer Sam Bevan or prop Sam as he should now be called after competing in his first game and helping the pack to win 3 scrums against the Head also a welcome back to Toby who after an illness was back on form.

Well done boys.

Greg

Animals v Harrow

After a fine display from the Beasts the Animals also stepped up to the plate this weekend with 15-0 and 10-0 wins.

Tries from Alex, Ellis, Jack, Reece and Thomas rounded off a great day. However the most wonderful thing about the 2 Animal’s games was the passing, with the wingers scoring 3 of the trys. A first for the boys. They have realized that they play better as a team rather than individuals.

With a great forward pack consisting of Jamie the salmon, Ali S, Reece and Kieran they held the own on a scum that must have had 4 stone on them. Ali L slipped easily into his new position as scrum-half with Sam outside him it could be the start of a Peter Stringer, Ronan O’Gara partnership.

As always Callum was involved, wherever the ball was he was there ripping or driving over and making a nuisance of himself. With superb running lines by Jack, Andy and Ellis Harrow had no reply to our speed and passing. The Animal’s defence was outstanding with Andy, Thomas and Alex making a number of tackles on Harrow’s big props as they tried to bully there way down the wing. Harrow attempted the driving maul a number of times however Ali S, Jamie, Reece and Kieran stopped them as soon as it started as their players peeled off from the back the ran into some impressive tackles from Sam and Callum using the guard system well.

Well done boys lets keep it up.
